It also helps listen out for the sounds of enemies teleporting in (which sounds like a bullet fired from a silenced weapon, only louder) and be wary of suspiciously placed items e.g. kamikazes) make such a racket that you can hear them from miles away.

You can avoid ambushes by listening to the music and ambient sound effects because the music will change to a much faster beat when a battle is imminent, plus some enemies (e.g. Be mindful of your surroundings: If you let yourself get cornered, then you will be dead in seconds.
